Why are apps blocked in China?
China operates a system called the Great Firewall that restricts access to many foreign websites and apps. This includes most Google services, major social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram, and messaging apps like WhatsApp and Telegram.
The blocks are enforced at the network level, meaning the apps simply cannot connect to their servers while you are in mainland China. This affects both Wi-Fi and mobile data connections.
What to do before your trip
- Download Chinese alternatives like WeChat for messaging and Amap for navigation before you arrive
- Set up a VPN if you need access to blocked services. Download and configure it before entering China
- Save offline content including maps, important emails, and any documents you might need
- Tell contacts how to reach you via WeChat or other working channels
Hong Kong and Macau are different
Hong Kong and Macau have separate internet regulations from mainland China. All apps work normally in these regions without any restrictions or need for a VPN.
