Climb (or cable-car) up White Pagoda Hill for the classic view over the Yellow River, Zhongshan Bridge, and Lanzhou. Allow 1 to 2 hours.
If you are in Lanzhou and you want one easy “yes, that was Lanzhou” view, this is the one. It looks a bit intimidating from the river because it is a proper hill, but it is straightforward once you are there. No weird rules, no complicated route planning, just stairs and viewpoints.
What it is and why people go
Baita Mountain Park (白塔山公园) sits on the north side of the Yellow River, basically opposite Zhongshan Bridge. The main reason to go is the view back over the river and the city, plus the White Pagoda at the top. Most people spend 1 to 2 hours here.
Tickets and opening hours
Entry is free.
Opening hours vary by season; a common posted window is around 7:00 to 19:00. Check the same day on Amap or Trip.com, because parks in China sometimes shift hours quietly.
How to get there without overthinking it
The simple way is to pair it with Zhongshan Bridge. Walk to the bridge, cross toward the north side of the river, and you will see entrances and stair routes going up the hill from that side. The address is No.1, Baitashan in Chengguan District.
If you do not feel like walking there, just open Didi inside Alipay and set the destination to 白塔山公园.
Walk up vs cable car
If you are even mildly fit, walking up is totally doable, but expect a lot of stairs. The upside is you can stop whenever you want and the views get better in layers.
If you want to save your legs, there is a cable car option. Expect roughly CNY 45 up, CNY 30 down, CNY 55 round trip. Prices change, so confirm on-site.
My honest take: if you only do the cable car both ways, it can feel a bit “in and out”. I like walking at least one direction, even if it is slow.
When to go
Late afternoon is the best time. You avoid the harsh midday light, and Lanzhou looks great as the city lights start to come on. Just keep the closing time in mind so you are not rushing down at the end.
Small things that make it easier
- Shoes: wear something with grip. The stairs are the whole experience.
- Warm layer: the top can feel cooler and windier than the river level, especially near sunset.
- Water: there are usually places to buy drinks, but I would not count on it the whole way up.
Quick verdict
If you are choosing between “another museum” and “one simple view that makes the city click”, I would pick Baita Mountain Park. It is not a deep, hidden gem. It is just a good, practical stop that delivers exactly what you want in Lanzhou: the Yellow River, the bridge, and a clear look at the city from above.
